Errata & Revisions

We will make corrections in future printings of our books when we become aware of needed revisions. Please note the following errata: and revisions:

Middle Fork and Main Salmon Rivers

As mentioned in the text, the Middle Fork of the Salmon is a dynamic river with frequent debris flows from tributaries that change the rapids.  As of mid-2009, we are aware of the following changes:

  • Debris flows at Lake Creek Rapid (mile 21.5) have increased the severity of this rapid.  You should stop and scout this from the trail on the right.
  • Tappan III Rapid (mile 58.7) has become a sharp drop following a 2008 blow-out from Cove Creek.  It has many jumbled, angular boulders and severe hydraulics at higher water levels.  Scout this one from the right.

Check with the river ranger at your put-in regarding these and any other changes they are aware of.

As always, be extremely cautious on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon Rivers.  Anecdotal evidence appears to indicate that the 2009 boating season has seen an unusually large number of boaters that have had difficulty on the rivers with flipped boats, lost gear, and injuries.

San Juan River

We received email correspondence from the Bureau of Land Management after this book went to press that they planned to change the river use regulations.  Their message read in part:

Permit stipulations for 2006 will read as follows:

Camping below Mile 64 (downstream from the Government Rapid camp) is allowed at one of the nine designated sites only (see map) and must be reserved prior to your launch.  All river users must have an assigned campsite in this area.  Camping at any of these sites without a reservation is a violation of permit stipulations, and may result in a citation.

This means that three campsites shown in the guidebook are no longer available: Corner Camp (mile 65.6), 68 Mile Camp, and 71.1 Mile Camp.  Camping below mile 64 will only be allowed by advance reservation at the nine campsites noted with asterisks.

Selway River

Map 1: Bad Luck Bar Camp is at mile 2.3 (left), across and just upstream from Bad Luck Creek.

Map 4 & 5:  Green Eggs (False Ham) Rapid (III) is at mile 23.3 where Ham Rapid is currently shown.
Ham Rapid (IV) is at mile 23.6.  Scout left.

Map 5: Tony Point Bridge camp is at mile 26.3 (right) at the pack bridge.  There is space here for two camps, one upstream and one downstream of the bridge, but parties sometimes spread through both areas.
Tony Point Camp is at mile 26.6 (left), across from and slightly upstream from Moose Creek.
Little Niagra Rapid (IV) begins immediately below the hard right bend at mile 28.6.  There are three separate sections to the rapid.  Scout from river right by hiking along the river trail from just below Ladle Rapid.

Map 7:  Dry Bar Camp is at mile 36.3, just around the right-hand bend from where it is currently shown.

Snake River in Hells Canyon

Map 4: Rush Creek Rapid should be shown as Class III-IV.
